One of our 2019 tour options: Half Day Private Cooking Class with Coco Pacheco
Participate in this one- of-a-kind culinary experience as you join renowned chef Jorge “Coco” Pacheco in his personal studio, La Ruca, for an interactive cooking class. For years Chef Pacheco has been a major influence in Chile’s gastronomical scene and is the owner of Aquí Está Coco restaurant in Santiago which is commonly referred to as one of the best seafood restaurants in all of the city. Upon reopening in 2010, Aquí Está Coco was distinguished as the first sustainable restaurant in Chile. Given that Chef Pacheco only uses the freshest of local ingredients, the meals you will prepare alongside him are to be determined by what Chef Pacheco finds at the local fish and produce markets that day. ¡Buen provecho!
JORGE “COCO” PACHECO is easily one of Chile’s most famous chefs and is known for his culinary creations involving seafood. In 1975, he opened the restaurant Aquí Está Coco (which translates to “Here’s Coco”) in one of Santiago’s most commercial and gastronomical hotspots, Providencia, and ever since, has been making history in Chile’s gastronomical scene. In 2008, a fire destroyed the entire structure but was rebuilt in 2010, reopening as Chile’s first sustainable restaurant, a true pioneer in its field. Inside the restaurant, diners can marvel at the beautiful art and artifacts hanging from the ceilings and wall – most of which are pieces Coco has collected throughout his world travels. The restaurant even has different themed dining rooms, including one in which diners eat at a boat-turned-table.
Choose between one of three routes to visit:
Barrio Italia (Italian Neighborhood)
Barrio Italia is a historic neighborhood located between the communes of Providencia and Ñuñoa. Settled by immigrant artisans in the 19th century it is no wonder that this barrio houses an effervescent art scene where a diversity of artists have built their workshops within the old mansions of the neighborhood. Art galleries and independent spaces have also popped up making this neighborhood an open-art gallery in itself. Simply walking through the streets, one can admire the beautiful furniture pieces, paintings and other craft pieces on display. Condé Nast Traveller magazine says that Barrio Italia is “Santiago’s Neighborhood on the Up.”
Barrios Yungay y República (Yunguy and Republic Neighborhoods)
Located in the western sector of Santiago, Barrio Yungay is one of the oldest and most culturally active neighborhoods in the Metropolitan Region. Many great men and women, many of whom were intellectuals, artistic, politicians and academics, lived in Barrio Yungay and drove the country’s educational, cultural, political and institutional development. Barrio República, which also sits in western Santiago, is one of the traditional neighborhoods of architectural and historical wealth throughout the capital. Many of the houses built in this area were constructed during the mining boom of the 19th century.
Barrio Vitacura (Vitacura Neighborhood)
Barrio Vitacura located in the northeastern part of Santiago borders the neighborhoods of Las Condes, Huechuraba and Lo Barnechea. Its name is derived from the Mapuche word “butacura,” meaning “Great Stone,” and it is one of the most affluent and fashionable areas of Santiago, housing many of the city’s wealthiest families and individuals. Its known for its chic restaurants, exclusive designer shopping, the spacious Parque Bicentenario (Bicentennial Park) and various art galleries. One such gallery is the Galería Animal, located on Alonso de Córdova and Nueva Costanera. This gallery was founded in the year 2000 and its space was specifically designed to promote and develop art collections which consist of a careful selection of contemporary works.

June 29 – July 7, 2019:
Chile, especially Valle del Elqui, is an astronomer’s paradise and probably one of the best places on earth to enjoy a total solar eclipse and a starry sky. The Valle del Elqui is located only 400 kilometers north of Santiago and offers an ideal star-gazing environment with its lack of precipitation, clear skies and low-to-zero light pollution. It enjoys the highest density of observatories on earth and will be the center of the upcoming total solar eclipse on July 2nd, 2019.
